Tundra

The Tundra is a biome in which the subsoil is permanently frozen leading to extremely cold temperatures, short growing seasons, no tree growth, winds, and very small rainfall. You can find various arctic species here as the Tundra cover vast flat regions of Europe, Asia, North America, Arctic, and on tops of many mountains.

Water and Carbon Cycle imageWater and Carbon Cycle image
 Water Cycle
  • The water cycle in the Tundra has a low precipitation rate at 50-350mm which includes melted snow
  • There is very low moisture in the Tundra because it is rarely humid because of the extremely low temperatures.
  • There is a lot of bodies of water in the Tundra because most of the sun's energy goes to melting all of the snow so the temperatures remain low and the soil/water remain frozen for years.
  • There is a very sharp increase in river flow once all the ice begins to melt but low amount near the permafrost barrier.
  • Temporary store of liquid due to loads to permafrost.

  Carbon Cycle
  • The Cycle Cycle is used by snow and ice which is 79% made up of Carbon.
  • The loads of permafrost in the Tundra affect the Carbon Cycle when the Carbon and Nitrogen from dead organism beings to get caught and stuck in the permafrost.

Ecosystem image
  • The main reason the ecosystem is how it is today is because all of the adaptations between the organism to successfully make an ecosystem.
  • If the plants did not grow low to the ground, then the animals would have no food source or primary consumer so the ecosystem would die off ad there would be no populations.

  • The Tundra biome is in secondary succession because of al the natural disasters and pollution caused by all the human impacts.
  • One of them being the history of the oil spills and drilling for oil which containment and release harmful gases in the air which forces species to migrate and move to a safer environment.

  • The evidence used to support the secondary succession is the amount of species that is left over like the decreasing amount of fish and penguins left in the ocean because of the all of the oil spills etc.
  • This can lead to the entire biome banishing because of all the pollution, majority of the food source is gone meaning populations will being to starve and decrease until there in none left this is why it is important to take care of the environment.

To Be A Survivor In The Tundra, There Are Some Things To Know
  • The North American Tundra hold many natural resources such as Iron, Nickel, Copper, Natural gases, and Oil.
  • The sources of fresh water vary in between different regions. In Canada, they have many freshwater sources but they are not all suitable to drink.
  • When needed a fuel sources for heat, there is many pathways to oil which can help produce heat and fire.
  • The most common threat to your survival is the Polar Bears and the Arctic Fox.
  • If you need to build shelter, although many people do not tend to live in the Tundra, an igloo is very common and you can build on by using snow and molding it into a dome shape to trap in heat.
  • If you plan to travel to the Tundra in the summer as the temperature rises and the amount of moisture rises, wildfires and drought are natural disasters you should be prepared for.
                Safe To Drink
  • Great Bear Lake
  • Great Slave Lake
  • One of the only sources NOT safe to drink is the Mackenzie Delta and it is so contaminated it is even killing off the fish in the delta.

                Edible Foods
  • Fish are the most common organism consumed in the Tundra but there are also many plants you can consume like Bearberry, Labrador Tea, Diamond Leaf, and Arctic Moss.
                Medical Needs
  • Rumex- A plant used to be placed over warts or bruised skin.
  • Iris- When you boil this plant and gargle it, it is used to treat sore throats.
  • Reindeer Moss- Is used to as a tea and when you drink it,  it is used to treat chest pain which is common in the mountain climbers in the Tundra.
